The Transformation of a Denim Dress into an Overcoat

“Real transformation requires real honesty. If you want to move forward – get real with yourself.” – Bryan McGill
The transformation of a denim dress into an overcoatSometimes I can’t help but notice that there is something about the transformation from a girl to a woman, that marks a transitional change from the way you used to perceive things then, to how you perceive them now.

Whether it is being honest with yourself, taking responsibility, making career choices, dressing yourself – or in this case, accidentally perceiving a denim dress as a denim overcoat.

For me, it goes back to 2008, when I was 14 and obsessed with fashion.

During that time, the one thing that was continuously trending were dresses. Everyone wore them – it didn’t matter that I bought more dresses than the occasions I had to wear them, and that they made my appearance look even more childish – the fact was, they were trending and I had to have them.

So you can imagine the shock the ‘present day me’ felt, when during sale time in Promod, I saw this baby and confidently said at billing “just this overcoat, please”, when the male cashier, no less, retorted saying “uh…ma’am, this is a dress.”

It’s funny, if not ironic that despite this revelation, I bought it.

Not because it was a beautiful buttoned down, faded blue number with pockets and a belt available at a throwaway price that I couldn’t let go of (which I couldn’t).

Had I still been in fashion, as a girl, I  would have most definitely perceived it as a dress. But today, as a woman, having found my place and passion, and undoubtedly abiding by the belief that fashion is a mode of expression and not the result of a trend – I can wear it as an overcoat.
